Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley (1797–1851) “Beware, for I am Fearless and therefore Powerful”. “A English writer Mary Shelley is best known for her horror novel Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus (1818). She was married to poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. The mother of “Frankenstein” author Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley was the renowned feminist Mary Wollstonecraft, who wrote the seminal work “A Vindication of the Rights of Woman” — and inspired her daughter’s interest in the literary arts. After she married poet Percy Bysshe Shelley in 1816, Mary Shelley entered a social circle of famous writers including poet Lord Byron. In a contest among these writers to create the best ghost story, Shelley came up with the idea for the book that would become “Frankenstein.” Shelley went on to write many other books, including “The Last Man” and “Mathilda,” but Frankenstein remains her most famous work. Shelley is considered by many to be the “mother of science fiction” with her melding of fantasy, science, and horror in “Frankenstein,” a work that has been adapted numerous times for theater and film.”
